A derogatory term for a black person who holds himself or herself subservient to whites．Although the title character of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin(1852)could be easygoing to the point of servility，he was a noble man who was flogged to death at the end of the book for refusing to reveal the hiding place of two female slaves．
